The clever part of the project came next. After connecting the first two sticks with string, she gently twisted the frame until the strings crossed over one another in the center. The result was a simple “X” shape stretching between the sticks. At first glance, the change didn’t seem particularly important. But that single twist was what made the entire basket possible. As the strings crossed, they naturally created openings at both the top and bottom of the frame. Those openings became the perfect place to insert another pair of sticks.
One stick was slid through the opening at the top. Another was placed through the bottom. Almost immediately, the structure started holding its shape. What had looked like two sticks connected by loose pieces of string suddenly resembled the beginnings of a real basket frame. The new sticks acted like crossbars, helping lock everything into position while preventing the frame from twisting back on itself.
A few small adjustments were all it took to square everything up. And for the first time, it became obvious that this wasn’t just a clever garden hack. It was actually going to work. But surprisingly, this small frame was only the foundation. The real basket wouldn’t begin taking shape until she started repeating the process again and again.
