Anyone who regularly buys hanging baskets knows how quickly the costs start adding up. First there’s the basket itself. Then the liner. Then the chain, the soil, and finally the plants. Before long, what seemed like a simple garden project can end up costing far more than expected. That’s why one gardener decided to try something completely different. Instead of heading to the garden center, she walked into her yard and started collecting sticks.
Not special sticks. Not treated wood. Just straight branches that happened to be the right size. At first, the idea seemed difficult to believe. Most people would look at a pile of sticks and see yard waste. She looked at them and saw the beginnings of a hanging basket. To start the project, she selected two sticks of roughly equal length and cut small notches near both ends. The cuts didn’t need to be deep. Their only purpose was to stop the string from slipping once everything was tied together.
Next, she connected the sticks using string at both the top and bottom. At this point, it still didn’t look anything like a basket. But that was about to change.
