Have you ever cleaned your yoga mat?

If you work out at home or participate in some morning yoga, you might be surprised to learn that you’re probably not cleaning your yoga mat often enough – or at all. Luckily, we share some tips that can help you clean your mat!

Machine wash

Did you know that you might be able to clean your yoga mat by throwing it in the washing machine? According to Vera Peterson, president of Molly Maid, some yoga mats can be washed in the washing machine. She told Better Homes & Gardens: “It’s important to always check the label or packaging to see if your mat is machine washable, since sometimes that is the easiest way for a quick clean.”

Cleaner

If your yoga mat is not machine washable, there are other ways to get the job done. Peterson shares a natural cleaning method that will clean your yoga mat in no time. All you need is half a cup of vinegar, two table spoons of baking soda and some tea tree oil. Mix everything in a spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with water. Some yoga mats can’t be sprayed with the mixture directly, that is why you want to spray some of it on a microfibre cloth and wipe your yoga mat down.

It’s as easy as that! Just make sure you let your mat dry completely before rolling it up and storing it, that way you won’t have to deal with mildew later on. If you wipe down your mat after every use, you won’t have to do a deep clean later.
