Suddenly, the older boy turned around to point at a picture on the menu board, inadvertently pulling his little brother out of reach. The man’s hand caught empty air. His fingers flexed before he slowly lowered his arm back to his side, his jaw clenching tight. He's hunting them, Jason thought, conviction hardening in his chest. He's waiting for the right second to force them out into that storm.
Jason couldn't just sit there and watch a crime unfold. Under the lip of the booth table, his thumbs rapidly tapped out three numbers: 9 - 1 - 1. He brought the speaker to his ear, keeping his chin buried in his chest and his voice down to a harsh whisper. "911, what is your emergency?" asked the dispatcher. "Taco Bell on Highway 90," Jason whispered frantically. "There's a guy in military fatigues here stalking two young kids... he's following them in the dark... I think he's about to grab them."
"Sir, remain calm," replied the dispatcher. "Are the children accompanied by an adult?" "No, they're completely alone," answered Jason. "They look terrified. This guy is huge and he’s been shadowing them since he walked in. He keeps reaching inside his coat."
