Jason couldn't stop analyzing the man's every twitch. The way he kept his shoulders square to the boys, the way his eyes constantly darted toward the glass doors to check the parking lot traffic, the way his jaw stayed clenched in a rigid line.
Why isn't anyone else seeing this? Jason thought, looking around at the two teenagers working the register and the elderly couple sitting near the windows. Everyone was lost in their own world while a nightmare was taking shape ten feet away. The younger boy, wiped rain from his eyes and shuffled toward the counter. The man stepped silently out of the shadow, trailing right behind him.
Keeping his hands hidden under the laminate table, Jason slid his phone out of his pocket, his fingers slick with sweat as he unlocked the screen. The man closed the gap to four feet. Then three. His left arm rose slowly, hovering just inches above the young boy's shivering shoulder.
