Mark lowered the trolling motor so they could approach without churning the water. He watched the fishfinder while Jenna carefully studied the shallows. The screen traced the bottom in broken lines. Then a form appeared, nearly six feet long, resting across the slope. One end stood several inches above the lakebed.
“That is not a branch,” Mark said. Jenna leaned toward the display. The object had an outline, but mud obscured what lay underneath. Mark moved sideways. Through the water, they saw folds in the covering. A strip of lighter material showed near the middle. It looked like clothing faded after years underwater.
The trailing line appeared again. Mark first assumed it was fishing line, but it looked much thicker. It disappeared beneath a flat piece of debris half-buried in silt. Jenna whispered, “No, not so close.” Mark immediately turned them away. As the boat changed direction, sunlight briefly reached the object from another angle. A smooth, pale area became visible beneath the dark covering. Jenna sat down hard beside the console. “Call now,” she said. This time, Mark did not argue. He pushed the throttle forward and steered toward open water, searching for a reliable phone signal.
