Morning light had begun filling the hospital windows when Daniels returned. Noel was sitting with a vending-machine coffee he had barely touched. “The woman’s name is Marissa,” the officer said. “The man following her is Lily’s father.” Noel immediately looked up. Daniels was careful with the details, but the basic story was simple. Marissa had been trying to get away from him after weeks of threats and frightening confrontations.
“She spotted his car outside your gas station,” Daniels explained. “She thought he had followed her there.” Noel stared at his coffee. “So she put Lily in the box?” “She needed somewhere she believed he wouldn’t find the baby.” The gas station was bright, staffed and covered by cameras. More importantly, Marissa had seen the hospital sign nearby. She believed that if anything went wrong, Noel could get help.
“She planned to come back?” Noel asked. Daniels nodded. Marissa had deliberately walked away so the man would follow her instead of entering the station. Once she reached the bus terminal, she went straight to security. But police had kept her there while they established what had happened. Her phone had also been left behind during the confrontation. “She’s been asking about Lily ever since,” Daniels said. Noel looked through the ward doors. “Does she know she’s here?” “She does now.”
