By four in the morning, another officer had retrieved footage from the gas station. Noel sat beside Daniels while they watched it on a tablet. The inside camera showed the woman entering, looking repeatedly through the windows and accepting the empty shoebox. Then came the outside recording. The dark car had already been parked across the street before she stepped outside.
“There,” Noel said. The man emerged almost immediately. Instead of heading toward him, the woman walked quickly in the opposite direction. He followed. At the next corner she began running. “She knew he was there,” Noel said. Daniels nodded. “Looks that way.” Another camera farther along the road showed the woman entering the all-night bus terminal with the man still behind her. Officers had already been sent there.
Twenty minutes later, Daniels’s phone rang. He listened silently. Noel watched his expression change. “They found her,” he said after hanging up. Noel stood. “She’s okay?” “She’s shaken, but yes.” The man had followed her into the terminal, where she had approached a security guard and asked for help. Police arrived soon afterward. “So why isn’t she here?” Noel asked. Daniels slipped the phone into his pocket. “Because officers are still talking to both of them.” Noel looked toward Lily’s room. At least now he knew one thing: her mother had not disappeared.
