Noel was standing beside Lily’s crib later that morning when he heard voices in the corridor. Lily looked completely different from the child he had found in the shoebox. Her cheeks had regained some color, and she was sleeping beneath a clean hospital blanket. Noel was about to leave when the door opened. A nurse stepped inside, followed by a woman wearing the same gray coat.
Noel recognized her immediately. Marissa stopped when she saw the crib. Her hand flew to her mouth. “Lily.” She crossed the room quickly, then stopped beside the baby as if afraid even to touch her. Tears ran down her face. “She’s okay?” The nurse nodded. “She’s doing well.” Marissa closed her eyes for a moment. Only then did she notice Noel standing on the other side of the room.
“You,” she said. Noel did not know what to say. Marissa looked at Lily again. “I’m sorry.” “Why didn’t you tell me?” Noel asked. She wiped her face. “Because if he saw me hand you my baby, he might have come inside after her.” She had recognized the car through the station window. She said, “I thought if I walked away alone, he’d follow me.” Noel remembered watching exactly that happen. “I only meant to be gone a few minutes,” she whispered.
