By the time Noel was finally allowed to sit down, his legs were shaking. Lily had been taken through a set of double doors, and the shoebox was gone with her. He sat beneath a television he wasn’t watching, staring at his hands. A few minutes later, Carla came back from the treatment area. “She’s stable,” she said. “Very cold, but stable.” Noel let out a breath. “So she’s going to be okay?” Carla gave him a small nod. “You got her here in time.”
Officer Daniels said, “I need to know everything about the woman who left her.” Noel told him about the gray coat, the shoebox, and the dark car across the road. When he mentioned the man getting out and following her, Daniels stopped writing. “Can you remember anything about the man or the car?” Noel shook his head to indicate no.
Daniels immediately asked about security cameras. “Inside and outside,” Noel said. The officer made a call and then looked back at him. “Good. That may tell us a lot.” Noel glanced toward the treatment-room doors. Until that moment, he had been thinking only about Lily. Now he pictured the woman disappearing down the dark street with someone behind her. For the first time, another possibility crossed his mind.
