Static crackled over the radio speaker. "Sea Rover, this is Coast Guard Monterey. State your current coordinates and the nature of your emergency." Hannah grabbed the mic. "I'm heading northwest off Point Pinos. The animal seems to be leading me toward—" Suddenly, a wet shadow slammed into the helm.
Hannah gasped, screaming as the seal lunged into the small cabin. It nudged her violently with its snout, shoving her away from the radio. "Get back!" she shrieked, backing into the corner. The seal barked wildly, slapping its rear tail flippers against the deck with desperate, stinging thuds. It looked at her one last time, its dark eyes filled with unbearable urgency.
Before Hannah could react, the seal turned, dragged itself to the gunwale, and hurled its body straight off the side of the boat. A loud splash echoed across the hull. Hannah scrambled out of the wheelhouse and ran to the bow, staring down into the freezing blue water. Through the light ocean mist ahead, she saw it.
