A Seal Climbed Onboard Her Boat and Refused to Leave — Once She Realized Why, It Broke Her Heart.

Hannah stepped back into the wheelhouse, her mind racing. She reached for the VHF marine radio microphone and dialed the emergency channel. "Coast Guard Station Monterey, this is the Sea Rover," she said, her voice tight. "I have an unusual situation. A large wild harbor seal has boarded my vessel and is displaying extreme distress."

While waiting for a response, Hannah kept her eyes on the animal perched at the bow. It was still staring intently toward the northwest, barking whenever the boat drifted off heading. She decided to test a wild theory. Hannah grabbed the steering wheel and turned it hard to the left.

Instantly, the seal spun around and let out a furious, sharp bark, snapping its jaws in disapproval. Hannah corrected the wheel, turning it back to the right. The seal snapped again. She leveled the boat, pointing the bow directly back toward the open northwest water. The seal immediately went silent, dropping its head and staring dead ahead. It was acting as a living compass.
