Drifting silently in the swells less than a quarter-mile away was a vessel. It was a rusted commercial fishing boat, riding low in the water. No engine hum vibrated from its hull. No flag flew from its mast. "Ahoy! Fishing vessel!" Hannah shouted through her hands, her voice swallowed by the vast emptiness of the ocean. Silence.
She grabbed her foghorn and blasted three sharp warnings. Nothing moved on the deck. The ship drifted aimlessly, dead in the water, looking like a forgotten ghost ship haunting the coast. Hannah brought her father’s boat to a crawl, idling fifty yards away.
In the water between the two boats, the seal resurfaced. It was swimming in tight, frantic circles around a thick line trailing from the ghost ship's stern. The seal bobbed violently, thrashing its head and slapping the water, crying out into the fog. Hannah edged her boat closer, peering over the side into the dark depths below the drifting ship. Her breath caught in her throat.
