Park Ranger Finds Massive Nest In Forest, Then He Looks Inside

Brian parked the truck at the road’s end, grabbed his pack and heavy-duty flashlight, and stepped into the timber. Within twenty minutes, the sound of the engine was long gone, replaced by an oppressive silence. The old-growth trees towered above him, their massive canopies rapidly blocking out the fading afternoon sun.

By the time he was a mile deep, dusk had settled over the forest, turning the woods into a maze of deep grays and blacks. Moisture hung heavy in the cold air, smelling of wet earth and decaying pine. As he crossed deeper into the ravines of Sector 4, his handheld radio emitted a long whine before settling into dead silence. Out here, the signal coverage was non-existent.

Brian clicked on his flashlight. The beam cut through the descending dark. He paused, catching a scent on the breeze. It wasn't just wood ash. It was an acrid, heavy chemical smell, sharp and thick.
