The dash radio crackled to life, breaking the low hum of the truck’s engine. "Ranger Kesler, do you copy?" Brian reached for the receiver, keeping one hand on the steering wheel as the truck bounced over a rutted dirt road in the late afternoon sun. "Copy, Dispatch. Go ahead."
"We just got a call from the North Ridge lookout tower," the voice reported over static. "They’re spotting thick, black smoke rising out of Sector 4. They can't pinpoint the exact coordinates due to the terrain, but it’s heavy. Need someone to get eyes on it."
Brian checked his dash clock. It was already past 4:00 PM. Sector 4 was an unmapped, dense expanse of old-growth timber in the Tongass wilderness. Before his appointment, the territory was largely unmonitored. "I'm close to the boundary line," Brian replied, eyeing the lengthening shadows. "I'll trek in on foot and see if I can locate the source before we lose the light."
