David took the phone and opened both photographs again. The mark sat near the same narrow shelf of rock. “Maybe something is stuck there,” he said. Claire shook her head. “But was it there when we arrived?” She started checking earlier pictures. One showed the same cliff with nothing unusual on it. “There,” she said. “No color.” She opened another. Still nothing.

David checked the timestamps. “This one is 3:41.” Claire opened the first image with the bright patch. “And this is 4:03.” David frowned. “Twenty-two minutes.” Claire looked at him. “So whatever it is appeared during that time.” They both went quiet. Then Claire said, “That sound we heard.” David nodded slowly. “I was thinking the same thing.”

Claire searched through the earlier photographs again. She stopped at a wide shot of the sky above the cliff. “Wait.” A small curved shape was visible in the distance. David leaned closer.
