Back at the cottage, Claire showered while David made tea and transferred photographs to his phone. They ate dinner and talked about taking a shorter route the next day. “My legs are voting for something flat,” Claire said. David laughed. “There is no flat around here.”
Claire picked up David’s phone and began scrolling. “You took about forty pictures of the same cliff,” she said. “Patience, it is called,” he replied. Then one photograph made her stop. Halfway down the distant rock face was a sharp patch of orange-red. Directly beneath it was a darker mark, long and uneven against the pale stone. “David, come here.” He leaned over her shoulder. “Could be a bush,” he said. Claire frowned. “And what is that underneath it?”
She opened the next photograph. The bright patch was still fixed in exactly the same place. But the dark shape below seemed slightly different. Its angle had changed. Claire moved back and forth between the pictures. “Look at the bottom part,” she said. David stopped smiling. A faint dark line also seemed to run from the bright patch toward the lower shape. “Maybe something is caught on the rock,” he said. Claire stared at it. “But why is it moving?” Neither of them had an answer.
