A German Shepherd Collapsed in a Children’s Hospital Holding a Plastic Bag. When the Nurse Opened It, She Called 911 Immediately!

The dog sat down, panting heavily, amber eyes fixed on Nora with unmistakable purpose. Nora looked from the dog to the bag. "Okay," she whispered. "Let's see what you brought here." She unrolled the top of the bag and tipped its contents onto her desk.

Out spilled the dumped contents of an elementary school backpack: a box of crayons, a half-empty water bottle, a single pink mitten, and a plastic school ID card. Nora picked up the ID. The photo showed a smiling seven-year-old girl with dark curls. Emma Carter. Grade 2.

Nora’s stomach dropped. She picked up her desk phone and dialed local dispatch. "Dispatch, this is Dr. Vance at Pinewood ER. I have a German Shepherd that just limped into our lobby carrying a child's school ID for an Emma Carter. I think a child might be missing in this storm." The dispatcher’s voice came back through heavy static. "Copy that, Dr. Vance. Emergency lines are overwhelmed and County 4x4s are currently pulled into a bus rollover on Route 4. We’re rerouting a unit to the hospital now, but ETA is forty minutes minimum."
