Thirty minutes later, Nora sat at her desk, finishing up her shift handoff notes. The dog had been dried off, wrapped in heated blankets, and given a fluid bolus. It was stable, sleeping fitfully in an empty triage bay.
Suddenly, a commotion shattered the quiet of the corridor. The dog was awake. Disoriented and panting frantically, it ignored the bowl of water Sarah had set down. It trotted clumsily out of the triage bay, its nose low to the floor, whining with an urgent, high-pitched desperation.
It bypassed Nora entirely and marched straight toward Sarah, who was carrying the blue plastic bag toward the utility room to throw it away. Before Sarah could react, the dog stepped into her path, gently but firmly clamped its jaws around the handles of the plastic bag, and yanked it out of her hands. "Hey!" Sarah gasped in surprise. The dog didn't eat or tear at the plastic. Instead, it turned around, trotted straight over to Nora's desk, and dropped the bag squarely at her boots.
