"We need someone here sooner than that, a child’s life might be in danger!" Nora argued, but the phone line crackled and went dead. A sharp bark made her look down. The German Shepherd stood by the glass entrance doors, whining, its tail stiff.
Nora followed the dog outside under the shelter. It ran straight to a parked car, resting its paws against the door panel and staring back at her expectantly. "You've got to be kidding me," Nora muttered. She went back inside, grabbed her gear and medical kit, and stepped back out to find the dog still waiting by the car.
Nora walked past it toward her dual-sport motorbike. The dog followed her right to the bike, paws hopping onto the side platform. Questioning her own sanity, she wondered why she was even doing this. Then she remembered the pink mitten on her desk and realized a child's life was in danger. Helping the dog onto the platform, she said, "We're going to freeze out there." Nora started the engine and drove into the storm.
