Instantly, Nora’s medical instincts took over. "Sarah! Grab a gurney and thermal blankets!" Nora called out, dropping to her knees beside the animal. The dog was severely hypothermic, its paws raw and bleeding from the ice. As Nora reached out to inspect its chest, her fingers brushed against the blue plastic bag.
Immediately, a low, warning growl rumbled deep in the dog’s throat. Even half-conscious, its head twitched toward Nora’s hand, eyes narrowing in desperate protection of its burden. "Easy, boy," Nora murmured softly, pulling her hand back just enough to soothe it. "I'm not going to hurt you."
Sarah rushed over with the gurney. Together, they carefully lifted the heavy animal onto the padded table. Nora carefully untied the twine, easing the bag free without provoking another growl, and handed it to the nurse. "Set this by the nurse's station," Nora instructed. "Let's get warm IV fluids going and get his core temp up first. We need to stabilize him right away."
