The building looked even stranger up close. Its stone walls formed a room beneath the cave roof, and its doorway opened onto darkness. Mara photographed it from several angles, keeping her feet behind the barrier. She tried to imagine waking up there. No window showed the time of day. No sunlight reached the floor. “Maybe the miners slept here,” Ethan said. Mara considered it, but the idea raised more questions. Why build a proper stone cottage when the cave entrance was within walking distance?
She checked the corners of the structure and noticed that one wall had been repaired. This was not an untouched ruin. Someone had taken care to keep it standing. Ethan moved along the path and called her over. Beyond the first cottage stood another, farther back in the cavern. Its walls were incomplete, but the shape was unmistakable. Mara took another photograph. “Two houses?” Ethan said. “Who needed two houses down here?” “That’s what we’re here to find out,” she replied.
Mara glanced toward the passage where Lisa was waiting, then turned back to the second cottage. She wanted a final photograph of its doorway before they left. That was when the cave went strangely quiet.
