At first Mara thought she was looking at another piece of old mining equipment. Then she saw how the blocks fitted together. It was a wall, with a corner that disappeared behind a shelf of rock. She crouched beside the railing to get a photograph. Ethan peered over her shoulder. “A storage room?” he suggested. “Maybe,” she said. The cave was full of evidence that people had worked here, and a sheltered space for tools would have made sense. But the wall looked unusually solid for a temporary store.
Mara followed the visitor path around the bend. More of the structure came into view: a doorway, another wall, and the outline of a small rectangular building. She stood still, trying to work out how anyone had carried so many heavy stones down here. Ethan counted the layers of rock with his light. “Somebody went to great trouble.” Mara agreed. Whatever the building had been used for, it had not been thrown together in an afternoon.
She lifted her camera and stepped toward a better angle. The passage widened beyond the wall, revealing the whole structure in the beam of her lamp. Now she could see exactly what they had found.
