Cave Explorers Find a House Deep Inside a Cave — Then They Hear Something Inside

Mara adjusted her camera and aimed it at the second cottage. The beam from her headlamp fell across the doorway and the bare stone inside. Ethan stood a few feet behind her, checking a photograph on his screen. “This one looks worse than the first,” he said. Mara nodded. Some of its walls had been lost, leaving the interior open to the cavern. She took one picture, then lowered her camera. Nearby, something had made a short, rough sound. She waited, listening over the faint drip of water.

“Did you hear that?” she asked. Ethan looked up. Before he could answer, the noise came again. It sounded like someone trying to clear their throat, followed by an uneven breath. Mara turned her lamp toward the doorway. She could see the floor and the far wall, but nothing moved. “Hello?” she called. Her voice traveled down the passage and came back thinner than she expected. Ethan took a step forward. “Maybe someone’s hurt.” Mara caught his sleeve before he reached the barrier.

They waited. For several seconds there was only silence. Then a harsh cough broke through the darkness, so loud that Mara felt certain someone was standing inside the cottage.
