The cable parted with a sharp snap. "One," the vet said. "Now the shoulder. Quick." The second wire was harder to reach. Dr. Okafor worked the forceps under it while Walt held his breath, and the bobcat's ears flicked once, then again. Her lips twitched back from her teeth in her sleep.
"She's coming up," the vet said. "Walt, now." Walt closed the pliers. His arms were shaking. Nothing happened. He shifted his grip and squeezed until his old shoulders burned, and the second cable snapped and sprang loose.
The vet pulled the wire away from her in one long, careful motion and threw it into the straw. "Back," he said. "Get back. Now." They backed toward the doors. On the bale, the bobcat's eyes opened. They were dull at first. Then they focused. She lifted her head and looked straight at the two men.
