Grandpa Finds Kittens in His Barn – Then the Vet Looks Up at the Hayloft and Turns Pale

"How long have we got?" Walt asked. "Twenty minutes. Maybe less. I went light on the dose." Walt was already moving. Fifty years of mending fence had left him with every tool a man could need, and he knew exactly where they were: on the back wall of the tractor shed, on the hook by the window.

He ran. He hadn't run in years. The snow was coming sideways now, and he went down once on one knee in the yard and got up again without feeling it. The fencing pliers were where they had always been. Heavy, old, the red handles worn pale by his own hands.

When he got back, breathing like a bellows, the vet had the front leg ready, the wire pulled clear of the fur with a pair of forceps. Walt set the jaws of the pliers on the cable and leaned on them with everything he had. On the bale, the bobcat's paw twitched.
