Grandpa Finds Kittens in His Barn – Then the Vet Looks Up at the Hayloft and Turns Pale

For a moment no one breathed. The bobcat stood up. She swayed, steadied herself, and put her weight on the front leg that had hung useless for days. It held.

She didn't look at the doors. She didn't look at the men. She stepped down from the bale and walked, stiff and slow, to the hollow in the hay where the other four kittens were mewling, and she lay down around them. Walt heard the barn door creak behind him. June was standing there with Lily, both of them covered in snow.

"Grandpa," Lily whispered. "Her baby." Walt looked down at his cap. The fifth kitten was asleep in it, warm against his flannel shirt. He walked forward, very slowly, and knelt at the edge of the hay, six feet from the bobcat. He set the cap down in the straw. Then he stepped back. The bobcat looked at him for a long, long moment.
