Jason sprinted toward the side exit, preparing to throw his weight into the towering figure to block the doorway. He reached the threshold just as the man stepped fully into his path, blocking the exit with his massive frame. Jason pulled up short, bracing for an immediate, violent collision with the giant in combat boots.
He looked up, heart hammering against his ribs, ready to demand the release of the boy. Instead of a cold-blooded abductor, Jason was met with a warm, gentle smile looking back down at him. Beside the man, the younger child was giggling, held safely against the man's side, and the other was grinning up at his brother.
"Excuse me, son," the man said in a calm, polite baritone, stepping around the frozen Jason. "Just trying to get these two out of the cold draft." Jason stood paralyzed in the doorway as the man walked calmly past him, carrying the tired nine-year-old straight up to the brightly lit ordering counter.
