A chill ran down Jason’s spine. The man moved with an unsettling, deliberate quietness—slow, precise steps that made almost no sound despite his heavy boots. His expression remained completely unreadable, carved out of stone. He took three calculated steps into the room and stopped cold, positioning his broad frame right between the children and the only exit.
The boys remained unaware. They began moving from table to table, holding up small plastic bags of homemade cookies from their cooler, desperately trying to pitch them to the few scattered patrons. Their voices were drowned out by the thunder outside. The man didn't order any food. He stood near the entrance, his dark eyes tracking every shift of the boys’ weight.
Jason’s mind raced with terrible possibilities. Was this a human trafficking situation? A runaway situation gone wrong? The man looked like he had military training, but his hyper-focused silence felt predatory to Jason's anxious eyes.
