Rain pounded against the double-pane windows of the Mobile, Alabama Taco Bell so hard it sounded like handfuls of gravel being thrown against the glass. Jason sat alone in a back corner booth, hands cupped around a lukewarm soda, staring listlessly at the wet asphalt outside. The heavy glass front door swung open, letting in a gust of damp wind and two young boys.
They were completely drenched. The older boy, barely thirteen, wore an oversized grey hoodie that sagged under the weight of absorbed rainwater. Beside him, a nine-year-old boy shivered violently, hugging a scuffed blue plastic cooler to his chest. They looked small, exhausted, and deeply out of place for a stormy weekday night.
Jason watched them whisper frantically to each other near the trash bins, scanning the quiet dining room. Where were their parents? Before Jason could process the thought, the door swung open a second time. A tall, broad-shouldered man in faded fatigues and heavy combat boots stepped inside. He didn't look at the menu board. His eyes locked directly onto the back of the small boy's neck.
