This Six-Year-Old Caught Her Neighbor Burying Something in the Dark — What She Discovered Changed Everything…

The next afternoon, Mabel marched straight up Mr. Higgins's driveway with the paper held out in front of her like evidence, Sir Hops-a-lot tucked under one arm for backup. "I know what you're doing," she announced. "I know about the body." Mr. Higgins, on his knees by a hole lined with black rubber, blinked up at her.

Then he laughed so hard he had to sit down right there in the dirt. "A body of water, sweetheart," he said, wiping his eyes. "It's a pond. For fish." He pointed at the crates, all empty now, stacked by the shed — pump parts, hose fittings, a bag of smooth blue pebbles. "It's for my wife. Forty years married this Saturday, and she's always wanted goldfish she could see without needing anybody's help getting down into the grass. I built it low, right along the ramp, so she can watch them from her chair."

"She goes to bed early most nights," he added, "so that's when I'd sneak out — didn't want her rolling out here at dusk and catching me mid-dig. I even moved her lemonade chair inside for a few days and left the ramp light off, so she wouldn't get curious and come see what all the noise was." He shook his head, grinning. "Guess I fooled everybody except you." Mabel looked at the hole, then at the picture in her hand. Then, slowly, her whole face went pink. "Oh," she said. "That's actually really nice."
