This Six-Year-Old Caught Her Neighbor Burying Something in the Dark — What She Discovered Changed Everything…

Nothing happened for a very long, very cold ten seconds. When Mabel finally peeked one eye open, Mr. Higgins had turned back around, muttering something about raccoons, and the shiny thing in his hand was just a garden trowel catching the porch light. Not a knife. Not any weapon from Detective Biscuit at all.

But that didn't mean the case was closed. Mabel spotted something pale poking out of the dirt near the fence — a folded paper, half-buried, edges gone soft from being outside. She reached through the fence slats and tugged it free with two fingers, heart thudding.

It had words on it, but grown-up words, the kind with too many letters. There was a picture, though: a little blue pond with a fountain, and a fish. Mabel frowned at it in the dark. A fish did not explain a body. A fish did not explain anything. She tucked it in her pajama pocket and crawled home, more confused than when she'd started.
