At 2:00 AM, frantic squawking shattered the tropical dark. Maggie sat bolt upright in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. Screeching wings and heavy thuds rattled the wooden frame of the distant coop outside. She grabbed her heavy flashlight and a pitchfork from the porch, sprinting barefoot across the wet grass into the humid night mist.
The beam of light sliced through the darkness. "Get off!" she yelled, swinging the bright light toward the wire mesh. Silence hit instantly. Whatever had rattled the timber was gone, swallowed by the dense rainforest undergrowth before she could even spot a shadow moving.
Maggie unlatched the door, her hands shaking violently as she shone the beam inside. Goldie was pressed flat into the corner, clucking frantically, but thankfully none of the four hens were dead. The nocturnal predator had fled empty-handed into the thick jungle night.
