She Thought Her Chicken Laid This TINY Egg, But What Hatched Surprised Her!

Maggie Harper counted four chickens where there used to be twenty. The coop was quiet, far too quiet, after a pack of wild dingoes had torn through the boundary mesh three nights ago. Maggie swept damp straw from the roosting bars, her knuckles sore from work. Her tropical Far North Queensland farm was struggling, surrounded by dense rainforest, and the loss of her flock felt like a final blow.

Only her favorite hen, Goldie, remained in the central box, settled low and broody. Goldie was due to lay any day now, a small comfort amid the recent destruction. Maggie gently stroked the hen’s warm brown feathers, trying to push down the anxiety knotting her stomach. Operating on the fringe of the Atherton Tablelands was tough, and the farm simply couldn't afford another loss.

She locked the coop door double-tight, secured the heavy iron latch, and prayed the wire would hold against the night. Walking back to the farmhouse, she looked out over the mist clinging to the ancient canopy, dreading what the darkness might bring to her isolated property.
