Samira’s lungs burned like fire as her regulator delivered a final, dry gasp of air. Dragging Jax through the last stretch of the twisting drainage pipe, she kicked furiously toward the open water outside the wreck, her vision narrowing to a dark tunnel.
They burst into the open sea on the far side of the reef, completely out of air. Kicking desperately for the surface four hundred feet above, Samira pulled her emergency buoyancy inflator, sending them shooting upward just as her consciousness began to slip. They broke the water's surface with a violent, gasping heave, gulping down cold night air right beside the shadow of a dark, low-profile tactical craft tethered to the Vigilant’s stern.
"How did they board without setting off the bridge alarms or being spotted on the radar?" Jax gasped between ragged breaths, his fingers clinging to the ship's anchor chain." Samira whispered, "They used a signal jammer.” She pointed to a small black box attached to the stern railing above them. "It created a radar blind spot and killed our comms. They climbed up while the crew was distracted. We go up the same way, tear that jammer down, and take back our ship."
