Within twenty minutes, Rangers Davis and Miller arrived at the meadow with air horns and wildlife tracking gear. Together, the three rangers conducted a thorough sweep of the perimeter, checking the mud for tracks, looking for fresh kills, and searching the tree canopy for signs of a mountain lion.
They found nothing. No tracks, no scent marks, no broken brush. "There's no predator here, Mark," Davis said, wiping sweat from his forehead as he walked back to the meadow. "Not a trace." Yet, in the center of the field, the sheep were still running in their desperate, frantic circle, refusing to disperse.
"It doesn't make sense," Mark muttered, watching the exhausted herd. "Let's try to guide them down to the old timber barn near the creek. Get them out of the open field."
