Before adding anything, there was one unpleasant job that had to be done first. The area underneath the gutter had collected plenty of the usual outdoor debris. Bits of leaves, dirt, old mulch and other gunk had worked their way into the spot where the water was hitting hardest. So Melissa put on a pair of gloves and started clearing it out. It wasn't exactly glamorous, but it didn't take long. And once the debris was gone, something became much more obvious.
The problem wasn't really the amount of water. It was what the water was doing when it reached the ground. Every time it rained, that concentrated stream was hitting one small area with enough force to scatter mulch and wash away soil. Instead of fighting the water, Melissa decided to give it somewhere to go.
That's where the bag of river rocks came in. She didn't need complicated drainage equipment or an expensive landscaping project. She simply needed to create a small area where the water could land, spread out and lose some of its force. And the solution was sitting in a bag at the hardware store.
