Ever have this problem? It rains for a few hours, and suddenly the flower bed next to your gutter looks like a tiny swamp. The mulch is everywhere except where you actually want it. Dirt has been washed away, your plants are sitting in a muddy mess, and there's a little trench forming underneath the spot where your gutter dumps all that water.
And every time you clean it up, you know what's coming. The next big rainstorm is just going to do it all over again. That's exactly what was happening in Melissa Carter's yard. The gutter itself was doing its job, but all that water was being concentrated into one small area, where it was hitting the ground hard enough to constantly disturb the flower bed.
Instead of rebuilding the garden every time it rained, Melissa decided to try something much simpler. And surprisingly, it didn't involve replacing the gutter, digging up the yard, or installing some complicated drainage system. She grabbed a bag of something that you can find at practically any landscaping or home improvement store. River rocks. And what she did with them turned that constantly muddy patch into something that actually looked like it belonged there.
