The banging didn't stop. It grew faster, harder; a sharp metallic clatter that finally rattled the stainless steel counters. "Alright, alright! I'm coming!" Manny wiped his hands on his apron, reached over, and switched the radio off, plunging the warm kitchen into sudden silence. He slid the heavy bolt back, expecting to see Joel’s flushed, hungry face asking if the rice was done.
Instead, the heavy door was kicked inward, bouncing hard against the wall. Two men stepped into the galley, framing the doorway. Neither of them was Joel. The man in front was tall and very thin, with a graying beard, cold dark eyes, and a frayed black-and-white scarf draped over his shoulders. The younger man standing right behind him held a long, curved hunting knife, its heavy steel blade reflecting the harsh fluorescent light of the galley.
Manny stood frozen, ladle dripping dark sauce onto his polished deck. Out in the quiet corridor, two more figures stood watch, long blades tucked under their arms as they looked up and down the stairwell. "Where is the captain?" the tall man asked in slow, careful English. "Where is the safe?"
