Cargo Ship Encounters Pirates – But What the Ship's Cook Does Next Stuns Them All!

The extractor fan roared overhead, and Manny Reyes sang along to old love songs, badly. He was sixty-one years old and had cooked on ocean vessels for thirty years. At 11:40 in the morning, under the pale glare of the Gulf of Aden, he was focused on only one thing: lunch. Today it was his famous chicken adobo.

Garlic, soy sauce, and bay leaves simmered in the heavy aluminum pot, filling the galley with a rich, familiar steam. He didn't notice when the floor subtly shifted beneath his worn sneakers. The deep, continuous hum of the main engine dropped an octave, then shuddered to a full stop. Manny just flipped a chicken thigh with his wooden spoon, humming right through the change.

Then came the banging. Heavy fists rattled against the galley’s thick outer door. Manny ignored it at first, nudging the radio knob up to drown it out. Young Joel Santos was always sneaking up early to steal a fresh roll before the rest of the crew filled the mess hall. "Patience, kid," Manny muttered with a grin.
