He stepped back onto the slick moss surrounding the base of the cedar. Placing a gloved palm against the rough bark, he took a breath to steady his nerves before pulling the starter cord. He never pulled it. Directly beneath his palm, from deep inside the trunk, came a sound that made his blood run cold.
It was a low, desperate whimper, followed by the soft, rapid rustle of something frantically scratching against crumbling, rotten wood. Marco froze, his breath hitching in his chest. He slowly removed his glove and pressed his bare ear directly against the cold, damp bark. The hidden space inside the cedar echoed clearly against his ear.
He heard wet, shallow breathing, followed by a high-pitched, crying sound—a noise of pure, trapped distress coming from deep inside the trunk. There was no mistake about it now. Something was alive inside the hollow tree, buried deep in the dark interior, right where his chainsaw blade had been inches from cutting.
