On Friday morning, Emily arrived wearing long sleeves despite the warm classroom. While reaching for a pencil, her sleeve slid back. A dark bruise covered her forearm. Claire waited until the other children were busy. “Emily, what happened there?” Emily pulled her sleeve down. “I bumped it.” “On what?” Claire asked. Emily paused too long. “A door.” Her voice was flat. The knot in Claire’s stomach tightened.
At lunch, Claire spoke with school counselor Megan Price. “I’m not saying I know what’s happening,” Claire said. “But she’s late almost every day. She saves food. She sleeps in class. Their mail is being returned. There’s that list of places, and I saw her father taking cash from someone.” Megan listened carefully. “And the bruise?” “She says a door.” Megan nodded. “We document what we see. We can’t do more than that right now.”
Later, Claire asked Emily if she wanted to speak with Megan. Emily’s eyes filled immediately. “No. Please don’t make me.” Claire crouched beside her desk. “Nobody is trying to get you in trouble.” Emily shook her head. “You don’t understand.” “Then help me understand.” Emily whispered, “If they find out, they’ll take him away.”
