Claire told herself there could be several reasonable explanations. Still, the strange details kept coming. Emily arrived twenty-five minutes late on Thursday and smelled faintly of damp fabric and gasoline. During silent reading, her eyes closed. Claire let her sleep for five minutes before touching her shoulder. Emily woke with a gasp. “It’s okay,” Claire said. “You fell asleep.” Emily sat upright. “I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.”
Before lunch, Emily approached Claire’s desk. “What time does school open?” she asked. “Seven forty-five.” Emily hesitated. “Can kids come earlier?” Claire studied her. “Sometimes. Why?” Emily looked toward the door. “No reason.” As she turned, a folded paper slipped from her notebook. Claire caught only a few lines before Emily grabbed it: West Lot, Riverside, Church Street, 24-Hour Mart. Different days were written beside each place. “What’s that?” Claire asked. Emily folded it fast. “Nothing.”
That afternoon, Claire saw Ryan beside the SUV talking to a man in work clothes. The man handed him a thick envelope. Ryan quickly tucked it into his jacket when he noticed Claire watching. Claire suddenly felt uneasy.
