Danny tapped the inner well of the bare steel rim with a brass hammer. Instead of a sharp, metallic ring, the steel produced a flat, deadened click, as if the hollow interior of the rim structure had been filled solid. Vance checked his watch again, anxiety written across his face.
"Look, I can't figure out why this rim is weighted like this right now," Danny told Vance. "Instead of holding you up, I'll sell you a fresh spare rim and mount a new tire so you can get on the road." Vance let out a huge sigh of relief, agreeing immediately to the swap.
Danny mounted a standard replacement wheel onto the trailer axle, torquing the lug bolts to spec. Before Vance climbed into his cab, Danny asked him where he was heading with the shipment. Vance mentioned his drop-off location at an industrial warehouse in Dallas, thanked Danny, and pulled out onto the highway.
