Your Cat Headbutting You Is Not Random — But You’ll Only Understand Its Meaning After Learning These Other Strange Cat Behaviors

When Your Cat Cries At Night

Nighttime meowing has a special way of sounding louder than daytime meowing. At 2 p.m., it is a small complaint. At 2 a.m., it becomes a full speech echoing down the hallway. Your cat may sit outside your bedroom door, call from the kitchen, or wander around as if narrating a ghost tour.

Cats are naturally active during parts of the night, especially when their instincts are telling them to hunt, explore, or patrol. Indoor cats may have energy left over if the day was quiet. A bored cat with a full battery can become very vocal when the house finally goes silent.

Extra play before bedtime can help. A short session with a wand toy, puzzle feeder, or chase game may take the edge off. But sudden, unusual, or intense night crying should not be brushed away, especially in older cats. Sometimes the message is not boredom. It could be discomfort, confusion, or a reason to call the vet.
