When Your Cat Sniffs You Like Evidence
Cats do not greet the world the way humans do. We look at faces, read expressions, and say hello. Cats collect information through scent. That is why your cat may inspect your shoes, hands, jacket, hair, grocery bags, and sometimes your face with the focus of a detective at a crime scene.
To them, scent is not just smell. It is news. Where have you been? Who touched you? Did another animal come near you? Did you dare to pet someone else’s cat? Your cat may not look shocked, but that nose is building a full report.
Sniffing can also be reassuring. Your familiar scent helps your cat confirm that you are still you, even if you came home carrying the smell of rain, restaurant food, or a suspicious dog. When your cat sniffs you, they are not being weird for no reason. They are checking the daily update on their favorite human.
