Dad Notices His Daughter’s Grave Is Always Green — Turns Pale When He Discovers Why

Caleb lived above an auto shop. Daniel climbed the stairs and knocked hard. Caleb opened the door in work clothes. His face changed. “Mr. Harper?” Daniel held up a photograph of the buried note. “Why are you leaving these at Emma’s grave?” Caleb read it. “I didn’t write that.”

Daniel accused him of using the side gate. Caleb admitted to visiting twice since returning. He had left lilies and an apology beneath a stone. “I treated her badly,” he said. “I wanted to say sorry somewhere.” The paper heart was his, but the water bottles and letters were not. Daniel showed him the threatening messages on Emma’s phone. Caleb looked ashamed. “I was angry then. But I never hurt her.”

Then Caleb said something that shocked Daniel. He told him that Emma had once called him from her workplace about a man watching her from across the street. “You know Emma thought that he was following her,” Caleb said. “I assumed she had made a mistake.” Daniel asked, “Who was he?” Caleb shook his head to say he didn’t know.
