Dad Notices His Daughter’s Grave Is Always Green — Turns Pale When He Discovers Why

Detective Helen Shaw watched as Sylvia scraped away the loose soil. The shallow hole held a sealed sleeve. Inside was an envelope addressed simply to “E.” Helen photographed it before he opened it. The note contained two lines: “I carried you with me today. I wish you could have seen it.”

“That sounds intimate,” Daniel said. Helen asked whether Emma had been seeing anyone besides Caleb. “Not that I knew.” Daniel realized how much of his daughter’s life had remained private. Helen warned him against confronting Caleb. She checked the accident file and confirmed Caleb had been working elsewhere when Emma’s car was struck. He had never been a person of interest in the case.

Sylvia called about a camera covering the service road. Its blurred footage showed a dark car entering before dawn. Only part of the plate was visible, but Detective Helen traced it to Caleb. Daniel stared at the image again. “So he hasn’t left her alone, not even in her death.” Helen reminded him that visiting a grave was not a crime. Daniel barely heard her. Someone had hidden letters and bottles beside Emma’s body. Waiting for another police check felt impossible. By nightfall, he had Caleb’s address and decided to visit him.
