The specialist introduced herself as Rachel and asked Laura to start from the beginning. Laura showed her the first cluster of holes, the softer section of lawn, and the bucket containing brown water. Rachel asked how old the house was, whether Laura had records of old drainage systems, and when the smell began. Laura answered everything she could, but she had little information.
Rachel did not offer a theory. Instead, she walked the yard slowly, marking spots with small flags. She pushed a probe into the soil beside one hole, pulled it out, then tried again farther away. Laura watched from the patio. At the third spot, the probe suddenly dropped deeper. Rachel froze, tested the same area again, and told Laura and Daniel to stay where they were.
“What did you find?” Laura asked. Rachel did not answer immediately. She checked another section and got the same result. Then she stepped back onto the patio. “There’s empty space under part of this lawn,” she said. Laura looked at the grass she had walked across every day. “How much empty space?” Rachel glanced toward the marked area. “I don’t know yet. But nobody should step over there until I do.”
