Laura stared at him. She had been so focused on the holes that she had not noticed anything unusual inside. Mr. Harris said the water pressure at the back of his property had suddenly dropped, especially from his garden tap. “It started yesterday,” he told her. “I thought they were working on the mains, but nobody else seems to know anything.”
Laura called Daniel outside, and the three walked to their garden tap. She placed a bucket underneath while Daniel turned the handle. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the pipe coughed and spat out a weak stream. The water looked cloudy at first. Seconds later, thick brown liquid splashed into the bucket and across the soil. Laura stepped back. The smell hit her immediately. It was the same foul odor coming from the holes.
“Turn it off,” she said. Daniel shut the tap. Laura looked from the bucket to the lawn and felt her stomach tighten. Mr. Harris stared toward the garden. “Whatever is happening,” he said, “I think it’s affecting more than your yard.” Laura stopped using the outside water and called for urgent help. By that afternoon, a drainage specialist was walking through her backyard.
